Developing Neutrals

The colour focus for this week ‘s module is neutral softer tints and pastel colours, hues of pinks and purple, soft greens, blues and neutral greys. Flowers and flowing shapes linked to the Arts and Crafts movement. Before we explore this theme further I would like us to spend a little time looking at neutral colours.

The aim of this colour project is to develop grey and neutral colours without using black. In my own practice I use black sparingly if at all. There are alternative options to create neutral and grey tints that offer a much richer spectrum.

You can use all the colours in the set to create the spectrum of neutral and grey colours. It is not a perfect science, but a very good way to develop a better understanding of greys, neutrals and colours suitable for shading.

Have a look at video to see the colour developments.
