After a week of exploring colours, observing and drawing flowers with ink, developing letter shapes and practicing making floral collage shapes... we are ready for the first main art project.
For this project we will be making an artwork consisting of flowers: a whole sheet covered with simple flower shapes, layering colours and adding shapes and details to create a cascade of flowers.
The main inspiration for this project is millefiori.
Millefiori is a glasswork technique which produces distinctive decorative patterns on glassware. The word combines the Italian mille and fiori and translates as 'thousands of flowers'.These designs are to be interpreted by you in order to create an artwork in your own style. By using the letter templates you will be able to create a wide range of flowers to be used. If you choose to, you can add drawn details with the dip pen on top. Here’s a link to a board with millefiori designs for inspiration.
See the video for a demonstration of the creating process.
In addition to using millefiori as inspiration, I have added Matyó embroidery as well. It's a folk embroidery that comes from a specific area in Hungary. If you would like to incorporate these designs in your main collage project have a look at this video for instructions.
More information on Matyó embroidery is available here and here. These are images of the outcomes.
This is a chance to experiment with different colour combinations within the main colour mixes. It's important to remember to keep it simple and make tiny adjustments to shapes: add layers and more detail as you progress. Enjoy creating your millefiori flower cascade.
