F is for...

No good fish goes anywhere without a porpoise.

- Lewis Carol

F is for Fabulous, Fantasy and Fish.

Before we start grab a pen or pencil and a piece of paper. Give yourself 30 seconds and draw a fish. Once you have done that, choose one lower case letter written slightly cursively. Pick from P, E, L, O or S. Write the letter and turn it in different directions, then turn it into a fish. The letter fish and your 30-second fish are probably very different.

At this point, having done the previous drawing projects, you will find it easier to anticipate how to adapt the letter shapes. By having to adapt to the letter shape, the fish becomes quite decorative or expressive.

The Project

After the bugs, designs and expressive faces we are doing something fun and probably on the whole a bit easier. The same process of using all 26 letters of the alphabet applies. Use the letters to inspire fish of all descriptions and proportions.

Try this a few times, remember the letter is just a component of the fish… but an integral part, not just an add-on. Think about the anatomy of a fish. They come in all shapes and sizes and are often very decorative, so you can really have fun at exploring shapes and ideas to try things out. Take your time to create 26 different fish, if you don’t like an outcome try the letter from a different angle.
