B is for...

The flower doesn’t dream of the bee, it blossoms and the bee comes.

The letter B on day two of Creative Leap

B stands for bugs, butterflies and bombilating* bees (*meaning buzzing or humming)

The entire alphabet is to be turned into drawings of all kinds of creepy crawlies and mini beasts. Insects are an incredible source of inspiration: their shapes, patterns and colours leave me in awe.

Mini Project

Write down all 26 letters of the alphabet on a medium sheet of paper, separating each letter. Write it with a cursive intention as supposed to just a print. The curved letters lean themselves better towards artistic shapes.

Now turn these shapes into insects. Some letter shapes will be straightforward and simple to use, for others you might have to try a few times. Some letters will work better upside down or sideways, so maybe draw with the page in different directions.

Remember feelers and legs, different angles, and adapt letters if you get stuck. Or just move on or rewrite the letter to suit your drawing better. If the letter looks more like a leaf, a flower or something the insect could be perched on, then go that way.

Insects are wonderfully varied. Have a look at this Pinterest board for some ideas that might help you:

Have a go. Improvise if you get frustrated with the letters. Not all of the letters will work at once - that’s fine, enjoy the process of discovery. What style suits your hand drawn letters, decorative or stylised, realistic or in a combination? Adapt it to suit your style.

I look forward to see all sorts of mini beast creations!
